He is the writer of the comic series Last sons of America, The lost boys of the U-Boat Bremen, Killing Marcus, and the upcoming Warlords of Appalachia from BOOM! Studios. He also writes the BAND! cartoon strip for Musicomic.com. Outside of writing, Johnson has a full-time career as a trumpet player, composer, arranger and teacher. As a Sergeant First Class in the United States Army, he regularly tours the United States with The U.S. Army Field Band and the Federal Brass of Washington, DC. He earned a Master of Music degree from the University of North Texas, where he served as Teaching Fellow for the Department of Jazz Studies, and a Bachelor of Music degree from Eastern Kentucky University.)
