La pérdida de biodiversidad es la única consecuencia verdaderamente irreversible de la degradación del medio ambiente: cuando se pierde una forma de vida, en cualquiera de sus niveles, no puede recuperarse jamás. Si bien hoy existen esfuerzos significativos para controlar la injerencia del hombre en el cambio climático, no existe la misma preocupación en lo que toca a la conservación de los ecosistemas.
