"Marek Edelman encabezó la sublevación del gueto de Varsovia. Durante su larga vida fue preguntado infinidad de veces sobre sus vivencias durante esos terribles arios. Pero siempre le rondaba una cuestión: ¿Por qué nadie le preguntaba si en el gueto hubo amor? ¿Por qué eso no le interesaba a nadie? Y afirmaba: Era el amor lo que ayudaba a resistir». En este libro Marek Edelman esboza la vida de los judíos en Polonia antes de la guerra y traza retratos de vecinos y conocidos suyos en el gueto, nos cuenta cómo eran las escuelas, los hospitales, la vida en la calle, y también el terror, la lucha por la supervivencia y la dignidad, los movimientos de resistencia y finalmente la sublevación. Una misma voluntad recorre todo el libro: salvar del olvido a muchas de las víctimas del gueto, con sus nombres y apellidos, porque, como dice Edelman seguramente nadie más va a evocarlas y es necesario que de ellas quede alguna huella».
