"En este breve pero intenso libro, Rita Levi-Montalcini desdeña las reflexiones consolatorias o las lamentaciones lúgubres sobre la vejez para explicarnos que el cerebro puede seguir funcionando perfectamente incluso a una edad avanzada, a diferencia de lo que ocurre con otras funciones fisiológicas. Si bien es cierto que pierde algunas de sus capacidades, las sustituye con otras que compensan e incluso superan a las perdidas: la neurobiología moderna demuestra que merced a las plasticidad neuronal el cerebro suple la pérdida de células provocada por la edad, haciendo que el resto aumente sus ramificaciones y utilizando otros circuitos neuronales. De aquí la importancia, con el paso de los años, de haber vivido intensamente. A la clara y didáctica exposición científica del libro la autora añade, por vía del ejemplo, las biografías de cinco personajes ilustres que tuvieron una gran actividad en sus años postreros: Galileo Galilei, Miguel Ángel, Ben Gurion, Bertrand Russell y Picasso.
